Two men remanded over death of British pensioner in Gers village

Two men have been charged and remanded in custody in connection with the death of an 85-year-old British man whose body was discovered outside his home in the village of Verlus, in the Gers region of southwest France, prosecutors said on Saturday, according to thelocal.fr.

The two suspects, aged 32 and 26, face charges of robbery leading to death after the victim, named as John Agner, was found outside his property on 26 September. He had suffered multiple injuries and later died.

The investigation was triggered on the night of 25–26 September, when police attempted to stop a vehicle near Mont-de-Marsan. The occupants fled on foot. Gendarmes traced the abandoned vehicle to its owner and, upon visiting his home, found him unconscious with severe injuries.

The 32-year-old suspect, who has 21 previous convictions, is also facing separate charges relating to an attempted murder in Mont-de-Marsan earlier this month. If convicted on the robbery leading to death charge, both men could face life imprisonment under French law.

Prosecutors confirmed both suspects were remanded in custody following their appearance before an examining magistrate.
