Opposition leader detained after shooting incident at superintendent's residence
Guyanese opposition leader Azruddin Mohamed and two other men were arrested in the early hours of Wednesday after an exchange of gunfire outside the home of a senior police officer involved in Mohamed's ongoing US extradition proceedings, timeslive.co.za reports, citing statements from the Guyana government and police.
Senior police superintendent Prem Narine, who is testifying in the extradition case, observed a vehicle passing his residence overnight on Tuesday. The vehicle returned, and Narine heard what he believed to be a gunshot as it approached. He took cover and fired several rounds at the car, which drove away. Officers later intercepted the vehicle and arrested Mohamed and the two men with him. A search uncovered a firearm and unlicensed ammunition, police said.
The government alleged that Mohamed and his companions had been filming Narine's home, that shots originated from their vehicle, and that the recovered firearm was unlicensed. Mohamed's office rejected those claims, denying any possession of a firearm, accusing police of planting it, and alleging the three men were assaulted and threatened during the arrest. The office described the shooting as an assassination attempt against Narine.
US prosecutors allege Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, conspired to commit fraud and laundered money through their gold exporting firm, Mohamed's Enterprise, defrauding the Guyanese government in the process. Both men were indicted in Florida and have denied wrongdoing, contesting their extradition in court.
Azruddin Mohamed has accused the government of targeting him politically since his entry into opposition leadership. He was elected opposition leader in January, following the 2025 general election in which his party, We Invest in Nationhood, won 16 of 65 parliamentary seats, becoming the leading opposition force. Members of the party held a press conference on Wednesday to protest his treatment by police. The party confirmed he remains in custody.
Mohamed has had multiple confrontations with authorities since his extradition case began.
