Hampshire man remanded for fatal hit-and-run that killed Rose Hall Town head teacher

A 35-year-old Corentyne man was remanded to prison on Friday after being charged in connection with the death of a head teacher struck by a vehicle on the Rose Hall Town Public Road earlier this week, newsroom.gy reports.
Arivindra Singh of Hampshire Village appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy at the Albion Magistrate's Court, where he faced a charge of driving motor car PJJ 7624 in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of 51-year-old Sonia Williams. Singh was not required to enter a plea on that charge.
He was also charged with failing to stop after the accident and failing to render assistance — two charges to which he pleaded not guilty.
His attorney, Charlyn Artiga, requested substantial bail with conditions, telling the court that Singh had voluntarily provided police with a video and audio interview detailing his account of the collision. According to Artiga, Singh maintains he was not speeding, was not under the influence of alcohol, and was not overtaking another vehicle at the time of the impact. The lawyer further told the court that, on Singh's account, Williams was in the process of opening her car door when she was struck, and that the collision could not have been avoided.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Collin Clarke objected to bail, describing Singh as a flight risk. Clarke told the court that Singh left the scene immediately after the accident without reporting it to police, and subsequently took the vehicle to a workshop to have the damage repaired. The prosecutor also stated that Williams was thrown approximately three to four feet from her vehicle upon impact, and that her car was parked entirely off the public road when Singh's vehicle allegedly veered into the path of the stationary car.
Clarke informed the court that the case file is complete but that Williams' post-mortem examination report remains outstanding.
Magistrate Hardy denied bail, citing the seriousness of the charges and Singh's conduct in the aftermath of the accident — specifically his alleged failure to report the matter to police and his decision to have the vehicle repaired. Singh was remanded and is expected to return to court on October 20 for further proceedings.
Police said Williams was struck at approximately 15:21 hours on September 14. Her motor car, PAK 5566, was stationary on the southern side of the Rose Hall Town Public Road when a white motor car, PJJ 7624, travelling west along the road, collided with her and the open front door of her vehicle.
Williams fell onto the roadway and sustained injuries across her body. She was transported to the Port Mourant Public Hospital and later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she died while receiving medical attention.
