Bench Warrant Issued After Accused Fails to Appear at Central Criminal Court in Cork

A bench warrant has been issued for the arrest of a 64-year-old man accused of rape after he failed to appear at the Central Criminal Court, sitting in Cork, echolive.ie reports.

The alleged rape of a male relates to an unspecified date between 1994 and 1997. The same defendant also faces five sexual assault charges from approximately the same period, involving the same complainant.

The matter had been listed for a call-over at the Central Criminal Court sitting, where trial dates were to be assigned to a number of cases.

Prosecution senior counsel Tom Creed told the court that the defendant, who is on bail, was not present, though he was represented by defence senior counsel Ray Boland.

Ms Justice Eileen Creed issued the bench warrant for the defendant's arrest on the application of the prosecution. No evidence was given regarding the background to the case.
