Jason Hutch extradited from Lanzarote, appears in Dublin court on organised crime charge

Jason Murphy, also known as Jason Hutch and son of Gerry "The Monk" Hutch, appeared before a special sitting of Dublin District Court on Thursday evening facing a single charge of facilitating or contributing to organised crime, irishexaminer.com reports.

Murphy, of The Paddocks, Clontarf, Dublin, had been flown back to Ireland from Lanzarote on a Government plane earlier that day. Spanish authorities had arrested him on the island on 8 April on foot of a European Arrest Warrant issued by the Irish High Court, with his extradition following a judicial process in Spain.

A Garda convoy transported Murphy across the capital to the Criminal Courts of Justice complex, arriving through the gates at around 6:39pm. A small number of onlookers watched as the cars passed. Inside court, he appeared in the dock wearing a dark blue T-shirt, a black jacket, and jeans, accompanied by gardaí.

A Garda officer told the court Murphy had been arrested at Baldonnel Aerodrome just after 5pm and was subsequently transported to Clondalkin Garda Station, where he was formally charged.

The charge relates to facilitating or contributing to organised crime between 12 April 2016 and 29 September 2021. When Judge Conor Fottrell asked if he understood the charge, Murphy replied "yes."

Murphy indicated he wished to be represented by a solicitor firm, but said the firm was unavailable to him due to the ongoing solicitors' strike. He was remanded to Cloverhill Prison, with the next mention of the case listed for 17 September.

His extradition was carried out by gardaí from the Extradition Unit and the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI), with logistical support provided by the Irish Air Corps.

Murphy is the sixth person to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice on charges arising from the GNBCI's criminal investigation. The Hutch criminal organisation was involved in a deadly gangland feud with the Kinahan gang in Ireland.
