A toddler was found on the roof of a multi-storey apartment building in Limerick and had to be pulled to safety by neighbours, Limerick District Court has heard, according to limerickleader.ie.
The child's mother, who cannot be named in order to protect the child's identity, appeared before Judge Patricia Harney in connection with an incident that took place in autumn 2023. She is charged with child cruelty.
At approximately 2pm on the day in question, gardaí received a report of a child on the roof of the building. The parents were not in the area at the time. When authorities arrived, an eyewitness confirmed the toddler had been on the roof; neighbours had already brought him down from the ledge and returned him to safety.
The child was under three years of age at the time, the woman's solicitor confirmed. After being removed from the roof, the toddler was found to be covered in faeces and non-verbal. He was subsequently brought to University Hospital Limerick, where no physical injuries were recorded.
Gardaí later spoke with both parents at their apartment, which the court heard was covered in rubbish, mould and faeces. Prosecuting Sergeant Jimmy Dillane told Judge Harney that both the woman and her co-accused were intoxicated at the time. The pair have since separated.
Taking the evidence and the seriousness of the charge into consideration, Judge Harney refused jurisdiction in the case and remanded the woman on bail. The matter will therefore likely proceed before the Circuit Court, where more serious penalties can be imposed.
The woman is due to appear again before Limerick District Court in December, when new directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions will be available.
