Limerick woman remanded after drugs haul found in shed and under her bed

A Limerick mother of three broke down in court on Wednesday after a judge refused her bail on charges relating to a €644,000 cocaine seizure at her home, limerickpost.ie reports.

Karen McGarry, 48, of Glendale Lawn, Old Singland Road, Limerick, cried out "Oh no, please, I beg of you" as Judge Valerie Corcoran remanded her in custody to Limerick Prison to await further directions.

McGarry faces two charges arising from a search of her property by members of the Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit, Henry Street Garda Station on Wednesday, 28 October. She is charged with one count of possession of cocaine for sale and supply, contrary to Section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, and one count of simple possession of cocaine, contrary to Section 3 of the same Act. She made no reply to either charge, Limerick District Court heard.

Gardaí executed a warrant to search the property and allegedly recovered the drugs in a shed and underneath McGarry's bed.

Her solicitor, Cathal Quirke, applied for bail, which was opposed by prosecuting Detective Garda Colm McHugh. Garda McHugh told the court he believed McGarry would commit further offences and fail to comply with bail conditions if released.

Arguing in favour of bail, Quirke said his client came from a "respected" family, that she had ongoing health difficulties, and that she had required medical attention while in custody. He said McGarry had instructed him she would abide by any conditions set, and warned that a refusal would have "life changing consequences for her and her family".

Judge Corcoran said she was required to weigh the seriousness of the charges and the quantity of drugs seized. She noted that McGarry was presumed innocent until proven otherwise, but said she was nonetheless satisfied to refuse bail.

McGarry was remanded in custody and is due to appear before the court again on 3 November.
