A man in his 60s has been charged after an alleged attempted assault on Taoiseach Micheál Martin at the National Ploughing Championships in Co Offaly.

A man in his 60s has been charged in connection with an alleged attempted assault on Taoiseach Micheál Martin at the National Ploughing Championships in Screggan, Co Offaly, the Irish Times reports.

Gardaí arrested the man at the event shortly after midday on Tuesday, after he was stopped as he attempted to approach the Taoiseach. The arrest arose from his interaction with members of the Garda at the scene.

No injuries were reported in the incident. The man was arrested under the Public Order Act and taken to a Garda station in Co Offaly.

He has since been charged and released on bail, and is due to appear before a sitting of the District Court at a later date.
