Portlaoise man accused of murdering wife appears in court via video link

Eugen Constantin (72), of 25 Church Street, Portlaoise, appeared before Portlaoise District Court charged with the murder of his wife, Adina Raluca Constantin, at their home address on 5 July 2026, leinsterexpress.ie reports.

Constantin joined the hearing by video link, though technical difficulties prevented him from being heard in the courtroom.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby told the court that the file was being forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions within the coming days. "We are looking for a month and we are confident we will have directions and/or a book then," Kirby said.

Solicitor Philip Meagher informed his client that the prosecution was seeking a four-week adjournment. Constantin nodded to indicate his consent. Meagher noted that his client had been granted bail in the High Court but was not in a position to take it up.

Judge Cody adjourned the matter to Portlaoise District Court on 28 September, with Constantin to appear again by video link on that date. The judge added that Constantin would be brought in person to Portlaoise District Court one week later for service of the book of evidence.
