Garda file lodged with DPP as extradition effort continues in Carney murder case
Gardaí have submitted a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the murder of Jamey Carney, a US-born mother of one found dead at her rented home off the Muckross Road in Killarney on July 7, Google News IE — Crime (en) reports.
Ms Carney, aged 43, had been assaulted and died of asphyxiation. She was remembered as "a ray of sunshine" — cheerful, kind, selfless and adventurous — at her funeral in Killarney on July 15.
Ahmad Al-Saqar, aged 28, the man she had been in a relationship with in the months before her death, was arrested in Jordan after leaving Ireland in the hours following her violent death. He boarded a bus from Killarney to Dublin shortly after 3am on July 7 and subsequently took a flight to Turkey before travelling on to Jordan, his country of origin. He has been held by Jordanian authorities since.
No extradition warrant has been issued at this time, but it is believed that one is being actively worked on. Two Irish detectives have already travelled to Jordan and met with police there, and gardaí continue to liaise with Jordanian authorities.
Jordan could prosecute Al-Saqar over Ms Carney's murder domestically, even though she was killed on Irish soil. Under Jordanian law, a suspect facing serious charges such as murder and assault can be held for up to 18 months before trial.
There is no extradition treaty between Ireland and Jordan, though extraditions can be arranged on a case-by-case basis, according to an Interpol source. Under Irish law, extradition can only be sought once a person has been formally charged with a criminal offence. No charges have been brought against Al-Saqar in Ireland to date. The submission of the garda file now places the decision on whether to direct charges with the DPP.
Al-Saqar's family has criticised certain media coverage of the case and stated that a person is innocent until proven guilty.
