Two men charged with raping an 18-year-old at Ceannt Railway Station in Galway have been refused bail by the High Court, which cited flight risk concerns.

Two men charged with the rape of an 18-year-old woman in a car parked at Ceannt Railway Station in Galway have been refused bail by the High Court, RTÉ News reports.

The men, aged 27 and 25, cannot be named for legal reasons. They appeared via video link at the bail hearing, with an Arabic interpreter present.

Both face charges of raping a female on 1 August at the Ceannt Railway Station car park, contrary to section 48 of the Offences Against The Person Act and section 2(1) of the Criminal Law Rape Amendment Act. They are also each charged with falsely imprisoning the same alleged victim on the same date and at the same location, an offence under section 15 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against The Person Act.

The pair had originally been remanded in custody after the District Court refused bail last month. They subsequently lodged a High Court application seeking release.

Detective Sergeant Trevor Shannon opposed the application, telling defence counsel that the men posed a flight risk and that no conditions could adequately address his concerns.

Ms Justice Biggs upheld those objections in her ruling, stating she agreed with the detective sergeant's assessment. She noted that the charges the men face are extremely serious and could only be tried before the Central Criminal Court.

Earlier this week, related proceedings in Galway District Court were adjourned until later this month, pending directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
