A former police corporal has been granted $1 million bail in connection with the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old in Gregory Park, Portmore, St Catherine, in 2022, jamaica-gleaner.com reports.
Charles Williams, 54, appeared before Justice Yvonne Brown in the St Catherine Circuit Court, where bail was set in relation to the alleged murder of Tyrone McDonald — known as 'Gulf' — who was shot on September 18, 2022, and later died at the Spanish Town Hospital on October 5 of that year.
As conditions of the bail, Williams was ordered to surrender his travel documents, stay away from the Gulf community, and have no contact with prosecution witnesses.
McDonald was reportedly shot at approximately 7:50 a.m. during a police operation in the community. According to police, officers came under fire from two men and returned fire, during which McDonald was struck and injured.
Williams had resigned from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) prior to migrating to the United States with his family. He returned to Jamaica last Wednesday and was subsequently arrested by members of the Inspectorate of Professional Standards Oversight Bureau, who executed a murder warrant against him.
At the bail hearing, Williams' attorney D'ondre Buchanan argued that his client posed no flight risk, pointing out that Williams had voluntarily returned to Jamaica after learning a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Buchanan further submitted that Williams had been acting in defence of himself and his colleagues at the time of the incident and was prepared to face the court.
Attorney Orville Morgan is also representing the defendant.
Williams was initially arrested in September upon his return to the island. He is due back in court on January 17.
