Rights Group Mourns Slain Corporal, Raises Alarm Over Child Shot in Sligoville Operation

Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) is calling for answers after a pre-dawn armed confrontation on the Sligoville Main Road in St Catherine left a Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) corporal dead and a 10-year-old girl hospitalised with gunshot wounds, jamaica-gleaner.com reports.

Corporal Trevoy Shaw was fatally shot during the operation, which began around 5:15 am on Friday in the Five Miles area of Sligoville. A Special Operations Branch team had been searching for wanted men when two suspects opened fire from inside a house where other occupants, including the child, were present.

A second officer was shot and is currently undergoing surgery. A third sustained injuries during the confrontation. The two wanted men were also killed.

The 10-year-old girl managed to escape the house but was subsequently found with gunshot wounds. She was transported to Spanish Town Hospital, where she is listed in serious but stable condition.

JFJ Executive Director Mickel Jackson said her organisation was grieving alongside the police force while seeking clarity on how the child came to be shot.

"We mourn with the JCF family during this difficult time. We are also deeply concerned by the shooting and injury of the 10-year-old girl," Jackson said.

Jackson added that JFJ was awaiting the findings of an independent investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), as well as further information from the JCF, "including the circumstances that resulted in the child being caught in the exchange of gunfire."

JFJ offered condolences to Corporal Shaw's family, colleagues and the wider police force, and extended wishes for a full recovery to both the injured child and the officers wounded in the operation.
