Man detained over abduction and sexual assault of 10-year-old girl in Clarendon

A man has been detained by police in Clarendon as a person of interest in the abduction and sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in May Pen earlier this month.

A man is being questioned by detectives in Clarendon after being detained on Thursday as a person of interest in the abduction and sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl, the Jamaica Observer reports.

"He is a person of interest. A man was picked up and we are doing some investigations. He is not a suspect at this stage pending further investigations," a police source said.

According to police, the incident occurred on September 8, when the schoolgirl stepped out of a taxi at the entrance to the Mineral Heights Housing Scheme while on her way to school. A man approached her and persuaded her to enter his vehicle.

The child was then taken to a neighbouring community, where she was sexually assaulted in a heavily vegetated area. The abductor subsequently released her near her school.

Staff at her primary school were alerted and the girl was taken to hospital. Police were notified shortly after. Investigations remain ongoing.
