A man was arrested Thursday as a person of interest in the alleged abduction and sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in Clarendon on September 8.

A man is in police custody in connection with the reported abduction and rape of a 10-year-old girl in Clarendon, jamaica-gleaner.com reports. Superintendent Anton-Gur Cardoza, commanding officer of the Clarendon Police Division, confirmed the arrest was made on Thursday as detectives pressed forward with their investigation into the September 8 incident.

The child had been on her way to school when she stepped out of a taxi near the entrance to the Mineral Heights Housing Scheme. A man allegedly approached her and persuaded her to get into a vehicle, according to reports.

The suspect then drove her to a neighbouring community, where she was allegedly sexually assaulted in a bushy area. She was subsequently returned to the vicinity of her school, after which she made her way inside and alerted members of staff.

Cardoza said the investigation remains active and that the outcome of inquiries will determine whether formal charges are brought against the man. "Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses," he said.
