Consultant neurosurgeon Dr Carl Bruce has been found not guilty on all charges in an assault case stretching back nearly 19 years, jamaica-gleaner.com reports.

Parish Judge Alwayne Smith delivered the ruling on Monday morning at the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.

Bruce, who serves as medical chief of staff at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), faced charges of assault occasioning bodily harm and malicious destruction of property. The charges stemmed from an alleged incident on July 31, 2007, in which he was accused of striking fellow neurosurgeon Dr Roger Hunter and damaging his shirt and tie.

The matter was not reported to police until November 2024 and was first mentioned in court last April. The trial got under way in April this year, with Hunter serving as the Crown's sole witness.

In his testimony, Hunter told the court that the alleged assault took place inside an operating theatre at UHWI while he was preparing for surgery. He said he had not reported the incident sooner because he had emigrated and was completing a medical fellowship abroad.
