St Mary Man, 22, Charged with Murder of Labourer Found Decomposed

St Mary suspect arrested after labourer's body found with chop wounds along garden path

The Jamaica Observer reports that a 22-year-old St Mary man has been charged with murder and several related offences following the death of 64-year-old labourer Clifton Campbell of Donnington, Gayle.

The accused, Dwight Campbell — also known as 'Cardo' — of Cox Piece district, St Mary, was apprehended during a targeted operation at his home as the investigation progressed.

Clifton was last seen at his residence at approximately 5:00 pm on Monday, August 31. A concerned relative, after receiving no word from him, visited the home between that date and Thursday, September 3, and discovered his body lying face down along a pathway leading to the house.

Port Maria Police, alerted by the relative, responded to the scene. The body showed burn marks and was in a state of decomposition. Clifton also appeared to have sustained chop wounds to the neck, back, and right wrist — with the wrist described as nearly severed.

The scene was processed by investigators, and the body was removed to the morgue pending a post-mortem examination.

Following a caution statement and an interview conducted in the presence of his attorney, Dwight Campbell was formally charged with: murder, robbery with aggravation, doing an act to pervert the course of justice, attempting to prevent the lawful burial of a corpse, attempting to dispose of a corpse, and misprision of felony.

A court date for Campbell is being finalised.
