St Andrew school on early dismissal after fatal shooting triggers roadblock

St Richard's Primary School on Red Hills Road in St Andrew issued an early-dismissal notice to parents on Tuesday morning after angry residents mounted a fiery roadblock along sections of the road, protesting a fatal police shooting, jamaica-gleaner.com reports.

The shooting took place along Karl Samuda Avenue. A man known by the alias 'Mad Dog' was shot and killed by police, though the exact circumstances of the incident had not yet been established at the time of reporting.

Residents responded by setting fires along Red Hills Road. The fires were subsequently extinguished, and a strong police presence was established in the area.

In a notice to parents, the school stated that operations on the compound had not been disrupted and that normal activities continued throughout the morning. The school nonetheless urged families to collect their children early if they could do so safely.

"While we encourage parents to remain calm, we encourage you to collect your children if you are able to do so safely. Please bear in mind the conditions in the surrounding area and exercise caution when travelling to and from the school," the school notice read. "Our priority remains the safety and well-being of our students and staff, and we will continue to act in their best interest."

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing the shooting.

As of 13 September, 215 people had been killed by Jamaica's security forces in alleged confrontations this year.
