Man known as 'Giant' shot dead after opening fire on officers in St Catherine

A 27-year-old man identified by police as Shane Clarke, also known as 'Giant', was shot and killed during an exchange of gunfire with officers in Old Harbour, St Catherine, on Tuesday evening, jamaica-gleaner.com reports. The incident took place at approximately 6:45 pm along Bowers Drive in the Colbeck area.

Police said they had received information that men travelling in a white Mercedes-Benz GLE, registered 4004 MD, were en route to Kingston to collect firearms before returning to Old Harbour. Officers located the vehicle along Bowers Drive and signalled the driver to stop.

The occupant allegedly opened fire at the police and sped away. Officers pursued the vehicle, which came to a halt a short distance further along the road. When officers approached on foot, the driver again fired at them. The police returned fire, which they described as an act of self-defence.

Clarke then drove off before crashing into an embankment, causing the vehicle to overturn. He was transported by police to May Pen Hospital in Clarendon, where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured during the incident.

Two firearms were recovered at the scene: a black-and-silver .380 pistol fitted with a magazine containing one round, and a black AK-47 rifle fitted with an empty magazine. The serial numbers on both weapons were reportedly not visible.

Clarke, originally from Berrydale, Porus, Manchester, has been linked by police sources to several major crimes, including robberies involving Beryllium security teams. The scene was processed by investigators and the inquiry is ongoing.
