Boy, 16, accused of torching Denham Town resident who refused to join protest

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent after allegedly setting a man ablaze in Denham Town, Kingston, according to jamaica-gleaner.com. The attack is said to have been motivated by the victim's refusal to take part in a community protest over a fatal police shooting.

The shooting in question claimed the life of Armani Malcolm, known as 'Bling Dawg', whom police have identified as the leader of the 'One Away' gang. Malcolm was killed by police in the Denham Town community on Friday, September 18. Residents staged a protest the following day.

Police allege that the teen, along with a man identified as Omarley Dennie, set the victim — a local resident — on fire during the unrest. Dennie was arrested and charged on Wednesday, September 23, with causing grievous bodily harm with intent in connection with the same incident.

The teenager, who had been listed as wanted, was apprehended on Tuesday, September 29, and taken to the Denham Town Criminal Investigations Branch. He was charged following a question-and-answer session and the recording of a caution statement.

His court date is currently being finalised.
