Fatal shooting follows pursuit on Old Greenvale Road
Two men described as alleged gunmen were shot and killed during an early-morning confrontation with police in Mandeville on Monday, Jamaica Observer reports. The incident occurred at approximately 6:40 am on Old Greenvale Road in Manchester parish.
Deputy Superintendent Odean Dennis, head of the Manchester police, said officers from Area Three Headquarters and the Manchester police division were conducting operations in the area when they received a tip-off. Reports indicated that men travelling in a silver Toyota Axio had pulled a firearm on a member of the public in the Mandeville area.
Officers pursued the vehicle and intercepted a car matching the description on Old Greenvale Road. When police signalled the driver to stop, occupants of the vehicle opened fire at the officers, Dennis said.
"Police returned the fire and thereafter two men were found suffering from gunshot wounds in that unit," he said.
A Smith & Wesson M&P rifle and rounds of ammunition were recovered from the vehicle during the incident.
Dennis used the occasion to issue a direct warning to would-be offenders. "Don't come to Manchester with criminal intent or you will be caught and if you are caught please surrender to the police, because we will take every legal step to ensure that we defend ourselves," he said, adding that authorities remain committed to keeping Mandeville and Manchester safe.
