PNP mourns two fallen officers after Sligoville gun confrontation
The Jamaica Observer reports that the People's National Party (PNP) has expressed deep sorrow following the deaths of two Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) officers killed during an operation in Five Miles, Sligoville, St Catherine.
Corporal Trevoy Shaw and Constable Devoney Rose, both members of the JCF's Special Operations Branch, sustained fatal gunshot wounds after confronting armed men who had barricaded themselves inside a house with other occupants. The operation began around 5:15 am on Friday. Shaw was pronounced dead that same day; Rose, who was rushed into surgery with gunshot wounds to the head, died on Saturday morning.
Also caught in the violence was a 10-year-old girl who was injured in the same incident. She remains in critical condition at the Spanish Town Hospital.
Fitz Jackson, Opposition Spokesman on National Security and Member of Parliament for St Catherine Southern, offered condolences to the officers' families and colleagues. "These officers left home to protect us and did not return," Jackson said. "Jamaica owes them a debt we can never fully repay."
Jackson also addressed the condition of the injured child directly. "No child should ever be caught in the line of fire. We are praying for this little girl's full recovery and for strength for her family," he said.
A third officer who reportedly suffered injuries unrelated to the shootout was treated at hospital and released.
Jackson called on all Jamaicans to "stand united against the gun violence that continues to rob our families of loved ones." He urged anyone with information to contact the police or Crime Stop at 311.
