Fatal police shooting in Watson Grove leaves two dead

Two men were killed by police during an intelligence-led operation in Watson Grove, Portmore, St Catherine, early Tuesday morning, jamaica-gleaner.com reports. An illegal Smith & Wesson pistol was seized at the scene.

The deceased have been identified as 26-year-old Javaughn Newell of Tarus Drive, Watson Grove, and a man known by the alias 'Brandon', from an area called Gulf in Gregory Park, Portmore.

At approximately 5:20 a.m., officers entered a yard on Tarus Road and approached a one-room concrete dwelling. They observed that one of its doors was ajar. Inside, two men were found on a bed. When officers announced their presence, the men moved to a corner.

According to police, one of the men picked up a gun and pointed it at the officers. Officers fired in his direction, wounding him. The second man then retrieved the same firearm and was also shot and wounded.

Both men were taken to Spanish Town Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

The recovered weapon was identified as a Smith & Wesson pistol, fitted with a magazine containing six rounds of .40-calibre ammunition.

The Independent Commission of Investigations has since launched a probe into the incident.
