Two Men Shot Dead by Police in St Catherine and St Elizabeth

Police fatally shot two men in separate armed confrontations in Spanish Town and Junction on Monday. The toll of fatal security-force encounters in 2026 now stands between 188 and 191.

Two fatal police shootings recorded on same day across Jamaica

Two men were shot and killed by police in separate alleged armed confrontations on Monday, the Jamaica Observer has reported, bringing further attention to Jamaica's rising count of fatal security-force encounters.

The first incident took place at approximately 8:15 am in the Long Lane area of March Pen Road, Spanish Town, St Catherine. Officers conducting a cordon-and-search operation approached a premises where an unidentified man was observed standing in a doorway. According to police, the man retreated inside as the team advanced.

Lawmen said they identified themselves before making a tactical approach to the building. The man allegedly re-emerged and pointed a firearm at officers, prompting what police described as "defensive action". He was shot and subsequently collapsed.

A Patriot 9mm pistol, fitted with a magazine holding five 9mm cartridges, was recovered at the scene. The man was transported to Spanish Town General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity had not been established by Monday evening.

"We are still waiting on relatives to come and identify the body," a representative of the Constabulary Communications Network, the Jamaica Constabulary Force's public-information arm, told Observer Online.

Hours later, a second fatal confrontation occurred in Junction, St Elizabeth. Jahmain Brown, otherwise called "Dada", of Chocolate Hill in the parish, was shot during a police encounter at around 10:00 pm. A firearm containing three cartridges was recovered following the incident.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) has opened investigations into both shootings. The Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau was also notified.

The deaths add to a growing national toll. Figures available in late August indicate that between 188 and 191 people have been fatally shot by security-force members since the start of 2026, a count that continues to draw public and institutional scrutiny.
