Two Men Shot Dead in Spanish Town Hours After Murder-Free Month Celebrated
Two labourers were killed in separate shootings in Spanish Town on September 1, just days after St Catherine North Police Division marked its first murder-free month in over two years.
Double killing ends Spanish Town's brief reprieve
The Jamaica Observer reports that two men were fatally shot in Spanish Town within 90 minutes of each other on the night of September 1, just days after the St Catherine North Police Division marked its first murder-free calendar month in 29 months.
The victims, both reportedly labourers, have not been formally identified. They are known only by the aliases "Chucky" and "Yankee".
At approximately 8:30 pm, Chucky was standing at 84 St John's Road when a gunman approached and opened fire, striking him multiple times. He was transported to Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Roughly 90 minutes later, at around 9:50 pm, Yankee was walking home along Old Harbour Road when he was ambushed. Police said the attacker had been lurking on a premises at 23 Old Harbour Road before opening fire. Yankee was also taken to Spanish Town Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
No motive has been established for either killing.
The shootings followed a period of intensified policing and community partnerships that had allowed the St Catherine North Division to close out August without a single recorded murder — its first such achievement in over two years.
Investigators from the Spanish Town Criminal Investigation Branch are probing both deaths.
