Two Officers Shot in Mount Salem Ambush, Gunman Found Dead

Two JCF officers were shot and injured during an early-morning operation in Mount Salem, St James. The man believed to have opened fire was found dead at the scene.

JCF condemns armed attack on officers during St James operation

Two members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force were shot and injured during a pre-dawn operation in Mount Salem, St James, on Wednesday, the Jamaica Observer reports. A third officer was also struck, but the bullet lodged in his bulletproof vest.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:25 am on Crawford Street, where a team from the Area One Fugitive Apprehension Team was conducting a targeted operation. Officers reportedly came under gunfire immediately upon entering the premises. The JCF said none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

The man believed to have fired on the officers was subsequently found dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered.

The JCF High Command issued a statement condemning what it described as a brazen attack on its members.

"Our members are on the front lines of the national effort to reduce murders, shootings and other violent crimes. They undertake this work at considerable personal risk, often confronting heavily armed individuals who have little regard for human life or lawful authority," the JCF said.

The High Command credited the team's training and tactical discipline for limiting casualties. "Their ability to respond under sustained danger helped to prevent further injury and loss of life. Law enforcement must retain the tactical advantage whenever officers confront armed criminals," it added.

The force commended the officers for their conduct under fire and confirmed that the Chaplaincy Branch, Welfare Department and Jamaica Police Federation have been engaged to support the injured officers and their families.

The Independent Commission of Investigations has been notified of the incident.
