Westmoreland Woman Charged After Faking Own Kidnapping for $600,000

A 36-year-old Westmoreland woman has been charged with creating public mischief after allegedly staging her own kidnapping. Police say the incident diverted resources from genuine emergencies.

Petersfield Woman Arrested After Fabricated Abduction Scheme

The Jamaica Observer reports that Alecia Watkins, 36, of Petersfield, Westmoreland — also known as "Renae" — has been arrested and charged with creating public mischief after allegedly staging her own kidnapping.

At around 7:43 pm on August 15, the father of Watkins' child received a photograph and voice note claiming she had been abducted, accompanied by a ransom demand of $600,000. The matter was reported to the Savanna-la-Mar police, and investigators from the parish's Criminal Investigation Branch launched an inquiry.

Two days later, on August 17 at approximately 11:00 pm, police received information that Watkins had returned home. She was taken to the Savanna-la-Mar Police Station and interviewed by investigators, whose findings determined the kidnapping had been fabricated.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force has since reminded the public that filing false reports can lead to prosecution and draws critical police resources away from genuine emergencies.
