Bail granted to young man caught up in St Paul's Bay drug trafficking investigation
A 20-year-old man has been released on bail after appearing in court on charges of possessing cannabis and cocaine while already subject to bail conditions, Times of Malta reports.
The accused is one of five individuals arrested during a drug trafficking operation in St Paul's Bay. The court imposed a publication ban on the man's name, citing ongoing investigations into the case.
The defence argued that the quantities of drugs involved were minimal and urged the court against setting a high deposit, questioning whether the personal guarantee should exceed it. The prosecution did not oppose bail, indicating the accused's release would not compromise proceedings and that there was no risk of evidence tampering.
Magistrate Astrid May Grima granted bail on a €1,000 deposit and a €10,000 personal guarantee. The man must sign the bail book three times weekly and comply with a curfew.
Inspector Francesco Mizzi led the prosecution; lawyer Jacob Magri represented the accused.
