Parliament to Debate Yorgen Fenech Acquittal on Friday, Abela Confirms

Parliamentary Debate Set After Fenech Not-Guilty Verdict
Prime Minister Robert Abela has confirmed that Parliament will convene on Friday to debate the acquittal of Yorgen Fenech in the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder trial, Lovin Malta reports.
The confirmation came as Abela spoke to journalists for the first time since Wednesday's 8-1 not-guilty verdict on both charges against Fenech.
The session follows a formal request by Opposition leader Alex Borg to Speaker Anġlu Farrugia to urgently reconvene Parliament in the wake of the ruling.
Abela said he will attend the debate, but cautioned that "responsibility must prevail" in the discussion, given that investigations relating to the assassination remain ongoing.
The Prime Minister pointed to Judge Edwina Grima's decision to refer testimony heard during the trial to the Police Commissioner for examination, as well as her order that evidence be added to two active inquiries. Abela said those steps mean politicians must exercise restraint to avoid prejudicing any ongoing investigative work.
When asked for his personal reaction to the jury's decision, Abela declined to respond, stating it was not his place to comment on the jurors' verdict.
Prosecutors, meanwhile, have 15 days to decide whether to file an appeal and are currently evaluating the judgment.
