AI scams on the rise as fraudsters deploy deepfakes and fake retail sites

Criminals are increasingly using artificial intelligence to supercharge fraud, bbc.com reports, with shoppers warned to exercise greater caution about where they buy online.

Some fraudsters have built websites for fictitious retailers, presenting them as family-owned businesses selling quality UK-made goods. The sites often feature AI-generated images of British high streets, complete with Union Jack flags, to appear legitimate. Customers who place orders either receive nothing or find a cheap, mass-produced item shipped from overseas, trading standards officers say.

AI-generated images, voice cloning and deepfake videos are now routinely deployed to steal money from unsuspecting victims, according to National Trading Standards. For the first time, the organisation has compiled an AI scam watchlist, detailing the tools and techniques criminals are currently using.

Some traditional methods of spotting scams are becoming less reliable. Typos and grammatical errors — long considered a tell-tale sign of fraud — can no longer be depended upon, consumer group Which? warns, as AI tools now generate polished, convincing text.

Trading standards officials advise consumers to stop and think before making any payment, sharing personal information or taking any action prompted by an unsolicited message or advert. Particular caution is urged when pressure or urgency is applied, as criminals deliberately push targets to act before they have time to consider.

Fraud and scams can be reported to Report Fraud or by calling 0300 123 2040. Consumers seeking advice can also contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133.
