Hove bus driver's intervention leads to conviction of domestic abuser
A whispered plea for help on a bus in Hove resulted in the arrest and conviction of a domestic abuser, theargus.co.uk reports.
James Sinden, 43, of no fixed address, was sentenced at Brighton Crown Court on Tuesday, 6 October, after his victim discreetly alerted a bus driver on 9 November 2025 while travelling with him. The driver removed Sinden from the vehicle, continued the route to keep the victim safe, and then called police.
Sinden received four years for assault by penetration and one year for false imprisonment, to run concurrently. He was also given an additional month in prison for breaching a previously suspended sentence for attempted burglary, and two months for a breached community order relating to assault. A seven-year restraining order was placed against him.
The bus driver received a court commendation for his role in bringing Sinden to justice.
Detective Sergeant Rod Davis said: "We commend the bravery of Sinden's victim for having the courage to alert the bus driver to the horrific abuse she was suffering, which subsequently led to Sinden's arrest."
Davis added that the driver was recognised by the court "for his part in bringing Sinden to justice and ensuring the victim was safe on that night in November last year."
Sussex Police also issued a wider message: "We want to assure anyone who is undergoing domestic abuse that you will be listened to, believed and supported."
