Six arrests made after violent attack on ship workers near Bristol docks
Six people have now been arrested in connection with a violent attack on three Filipino ship workers near Avonmouth Docks in Bristol, bbc.co.uk reports.
The incident took place in the early hours of 31 July at Richmond Terrace, close to the docks, and involved a large group, according to Avon and Somerset Police. The three victims are Filipino nationals who had recently docked at Avonmouth.
One of the victims remains in a critical condition in hospital, while a second has been discharged after receiving medical treatment.
The two most recent arrests — an 18-year-old man detained on Thursday and a 28-year-old man arrested earlier — both relate to suspicion of attempted murder, bringing the total number of those arrested to six.
Kurtis Ranklin, 45, from Southmead, was charged last week with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and has been remanded in custody. He is due to appear at Bristol Crown Court on 4 September. A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and is also scheduled to appear in court on that date.
Two further individuals — a 19-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman — were previously arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and assisting an offender respectively. Both remain on conditional bail.
Detective Inspector Kate Bettel said the attack had left residents in the area shaken. "We know this incident has left people in the area shocked and we wish to reassure them that our investigation is progressing," she said.
Bettel added that a man at the centre of the investigation remains critically ill and that officers are doing all they can to keep his family informed. She urged anyone with information to come forward, stressing the importance of public assistance given "the seriousness of the injuries sustained".
