Arizona surgeon charged after drug-filled luggage flagged at PortMiami cruise terminal

An orthopedic surgeon from Arizona was arrested last Tuesday at PortMiami after federal border agents allegedly discovered a cache of narcotics hidden among everyday items in his luggage, katu.com reports.

Dr. Jacob Lee Henrichsen, 38, had arrived at Terminal B to board Norwegian Cruise Line's "Jewel," a vessel bound for Nassau in the Bahamas. The arrest took place as part of an outbound inspection operation known as "Operation Temptation 2026."

During a routine X-ray screening, agents flagged a Pelican case for secondary inspection. Henrichsen completed a customs declaration confirming all items in the case belonged to him. Officers then searched the container and allegedly found contraband disguised as confectionery and vape products.

A field test reportedly identified approximately 12 grams of MDMA in the form of capsules, gummies and pills stamped with the Tesla logo. Around 160 grams of mushroom edibles tested positive for LSD properties. More than 300 grams of THC gummies, vape oil and mints were also seized, according to the arrest affidavit cited by katu.com.

Homeland Security reviewed the case and determined the total quantity of alleged narcotics did not meet the threshold for federal prosecution. Jurisdiction was subsequently transferred to Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office detectives, who carried out the arrest.

Henrichsen was charged with drug trafficking and possession. He was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correction Center and held on a $40,000 bond, according to WTVJ.

At a court hearing the following Wednesday, Henrichsen's attorney contested the reported weights of the substances. "This isn't pure MDMA," the attorney stated. "These are gummies that are largely sugar and water. There are small quantities of MDMA inside of them."

Henrichsen practices at Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center in Safford, Arizona. The hospital's vice president of marketing and community relations, Danny Smith, issued a written statement following the arrest: "Be assured we will act responsibly as we learn more. The safety, privacy, and care of our patients remain our absolute highest priorities. Because this news is an allegation, as well as a confidential personnel matter, MGRMC cannot provide further comments or details at this time."
