The shooting took place at approximately 7:40 p.m. on Friday, September 18, in an open field near South Old State Road, north of East Robbins Road in Ellendale, Sussex County.

Walter Moorhead, of Salisbury, Maryland, was positioned in a ground blind when he fired the shot that struck a 39-year-old woman from Georgetown, Delaware. At the time of the shooting, the woman was walking with a man and two children. Her identity has not yet been released by authorities.

The woman was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after the incident.

Moorhead told police he believed he had spotted a deer when he pulled the trigger. He has since been charged with manslaughter and related offences. Following his arraignment, Moorhead was released on a $43,000 bond.
