A University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football player was fatally stabbed in Providence, Rhode Island, in the early hours of Saturday morning, cbsnews.com reports. A fellow student has since been arrested and charged with his murder.

Eighteen-year-old freshman running back Marvins Antoine had been at the Mezzo Lounge on Charles Street with teammates on Friday night, just hours after the Corsairs lost a home game against Framingham State. Around midnight, a dispute inside the nightclub spilled across the street into a Wendy's restaurant car park, where two players were stabbed.

Antoine was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, where he died from stab wounds to the chest. A second player, 19-year-old freshman defensive back Kensley Macean, was also taken to hospital with wounds to his head, neck and left arm. Police described Macean's injuries as non-life-threatening. According to the university, Antoine had graduated from Durfee High School in Fall River, while Macean attended Dighton-Rehoboth High School.

At a press conference on Saturday afternoon, Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said a third UMass Dartmouth student — 19-year-old Chukuwnonoso Uzoma Eze — had been arrested on campus. Eze is not a member of the football team. He is being held by university police pending transfer to Rhode Island to face the murder charge.

Perez said Flock cameras in the area helped investigators identify the vehicle Eze used to flee the scene and subsequently locate him on campus. The chief described the initial trigger as a dispute involving a woman and some of the victims who were waiting in line outside the venue.

"There was an altercation between a female and some of the victims that were in line," Perez said. "And then the altercation moved over to the parking lot of the Wendy's, but we have no indication that they knew each other."

UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark Fuller issued a statement expressing condolences to Antoine's family and teammates. "Our hearts and prayers are very much with Marvins' family, friends, classmates, and teammates as we mourn his loss together," Fuller said. He added that the university also wished Macean a swift recovery and hoped he would be able to return to his studies soon.

Investigators are continuing to examine what led up to the stabbing. The UMass Dartmouth campus lies approximately 30 miles southeast of Providence.
