A 74-year-old Maryland hunter shot and killed a woman Friday evening after mistaking her for a deer in an open field in Ellendale, Delaware, delawareonline.com reports.

The shooting took place at approximately 7:40 p.m. on September 18 near South Old State Road, north of East Robbins Road in Sussex County, according to Delaware State Police.

Walter Moorhead, of Salisbury, Maryland, was positioned in a ground blind hunting for deer when he fired the fatal shot. The victim, a 39-year-old woman from Georgetown, Delaware, was walking in the field at the time alongside a man and two children. She was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after the incident.

Police said Moorhead stated he believed he had seen a deer when he discharged his weapon. He has since been charged with manslaughter and related offences.

Moorhead was arraigned and released on a $43,000 bond. The identity of the victim has not yet been released by authorities.
