Woman shot by NYPD officer after refusing commands at South Ozone Park home
A woman was shot by a New York Police Department officer on Saturday morning following a chaotic incident at a residence on 149th Street in South Ozone Park, Queens, abc7ny.com reports. An investigation is now underway into the circumstances of the shooting.
Police received multiple 911 calls about a break-in and stabbing at the address. Officers knocked on the front door upon arrival but received no response. Shortly after, a man called out from a second-floor window, stating he had been stabbed by his uncle. A woman on the third floor then opened a window and threw her keys down to officers, allowing them entry.
Inside on the third floor, officers found a woman and two men engaged in a physical struggle. The group separated when police issued commands to raise their hands.
NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera described what followed. "The female pointed with her left hand at one of the males across the room but did not raise her right hand," Rivera said. "The officers continued to issue the same verbal commands, the female still did not comply and moved in the direction of the officers with a knife in her hand. She was within several feet of the officers when an officer discharged his firearm, striking her. She fell to the ground, an officer deployed his taser and another officer recovered the knife."
Emergency responders transported the woman to hospital, where she was listed in stable condition. Three other men were taken to hospital with stab wounds.
Police have not yet released information on what triggered the stabbings inside the home.
