Couple arrested after severely malnourished daughter found at Charleston Dunkin'
A West Virginia couple has been charged with child neglect after their 12-year-old daughter — weighing only 40 pounds — was found wandering alone through a Charleston neighborhood, local12.com reports.
The girl left her home in early October and walked roughly half a mile before ending up at a Dunkin' location in Charleston. She had been wandering for several hours. Officers who responded described her as extremely thin, with visible bone structure in her hands and feet. She was too weak to stand on her own; detectives had to support her upright in order to photograph her condition.
Investigators traced the girl back to a nearby apartment complex, where she had been living with her parents, Nuwna Overton and Clarence Spotsville, both 33. A criminal complaint states that neither parent showed any evidence of having called 911 during the hours their daughter was missing.
Both Overton and Spotsville were arrested and charged with child neglect creating risk of bodily injury. They have since bonded out of jail.
Court records and a Notice of Intent from Kanawha County Schools, uncovered by WCHS, indicate that at least five children were under Overton and Spotsville's guardianship. The notice showed the children had been offered a scholarship to a private school or institution for the 2026–27 school year.
A neighbor at the complex, Unique Hall, said she had no idea children were living there. "When I came after everything that had happened, I was like, 'Oh my God, I didn't even know that there were kids living there,'" Hall said. "It's just really sad that the kids have to go through that."
