Two male suspects have been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at Dover Commons shopping centre on 10 October 2026. Nasir Cox, 22, was killed; a second man remains hospitalised.

Shooting outside Delaware State University homecoming leaves one dead, two in custody
The Dover Police Department has arrested two male suspects in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on Saturday, 10 October 2026, at approximately 9:19 p.m. in the parking lot of the Dover Commons Shopping Center, located on the 1200 block of North DuPont Highway, Dover, Delaware. According to doverpolice.org, Nasir Cox, 22, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was killed, and a 21-year-old male was injured in the attack.
The shooting took place in the aftermath of Delaware State University's homecoming events. Earlier that evening, thousands of students and visitors had been directed to leave campus at approximately 6:00 p.m., resulting in large crowds forming at several nearby shopping centres and other locations. More than 50 officers from multiple agencies — including the Dover, New Castle County, Wilmington, Smyrna, and Camden police departments, as well as Delaware State Police — were already deployed in the area managing crowds and responding to multiple disturbances, including fights, disorderly conduct, and reports of shots fired at separate locations.
Officers near a parking lot heard gunfire and observed individuals fleeing the Dover Commons lot. They located a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his upper body, and shortly after found Cox, who had also sustained gunshot wounds. Because Route 13 between the university and the shopping centres was entirely gridlocked with vehicle and pedestrian traffic, officers transported both victims to Bayhealth Kent Campus in police vehicles to give them the best chance of survival. Cox later died from his injuries. The 21-year-old remains hospitalised in stable condition.
First suspect arrested on 16 October
Investigators identified a 22-year-old male from Dover as one of the suspected shooters and obtained warrants for his arrest and a search of his residence. On 16 October 2026, at approximately 1:10 p.m., members of the Dover Police Department's Special Operations Response Team, along with the Drugs, Vice and Organised Crime Unit and the Criminal Investigations Unit, converged on a residence in the 500 block of Crawford Avenue. They were assisted by the U.S. Marshals Service First State Fugitive Task Force and Delaware State Police. The suspect exited the residence after officers announced their presence and was taken into custody without incident.
During the subsequent search, investigators recovered a 9mm handgun, ammunition, and clothing and accessories consistent with those worn during the shooting.
Second suspect located in Maryland
Detectives identified an 18-year-old male as the second suspected shooter and obtained an arrest warrant. Information gathered during the investigation suggested he may have been in Sussex County, Delaware, or Eastern Maryland. On 21 October 2026, members of the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force–Salisbury located the suspect at a residence in Snow Hill, Maryland. He was taken into custody without incident and is being held in Maryland pending extradition to Delaware.
A previous version of the police release had identified this suspect as a 17-year-old male. The Dover Police Department issued a correction confirming he is 18 years old and was that age at the time of the shooting.
Both suspects face charges in connection with the incident. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Chief cites cross-jurisdictional cooperation
Dover Police Chief Thomas Johnson, Jr., attributed the arrests to sustained investigative effort across multiple agencies. "These arrests reflect the persistence, investigative skill, and professionalism required to bring a complex and challenging case to this stage," Johnson said. "Our investigators worked diligently to identify those responsible, develop the evidence, and coordinate apprehensions across jurisdictional boundaries."
Johnson thanked Delaware State Police, the U.S. Marshals Service First State Fugitive Task Force, and the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force–Salisbury for their assistance. "While these arrests cannot undo the harm inflicted, they represent an important step toward accountability and justice for the victims, their families, and our community," he added.
The department noted that Delaware's House Bill 59, which entered into effect on 21 October 2026, restricts law enforcement from releasing names and photographs of individuals charged with a crime unless the charge is a felony and disclosure is deemed necessary to protect public safety. The department stated it is complying with those requirements.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information, photographs, or video footage from the area around the time of the shooting is asked to contact the Dover Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit at 302-736-7111. Tips may also be submitted through Delaware Crime Stoppers or the department's online contact form. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
