Bermuda man pinned under motorcycle faces 18-month driving ban
A 63-year-old man found trapped beneath a running motorcycle has been barred from driving all vehicles for 18 months, royalgazette.com reports.
Basil Gibbons Jr, of St George's, appeared in Magistrates' Court and admitted having care and control of a motorbike while carrying more than the legal alcohol limit in his blood and without a valid driver's licence.
Police found Gibbons on December 6 last year near the Arboretum in Devonshire, with the motorcycle — engine running and lights on — on top of him. Officers helped remove the vehicle; Gibbons told them he did not require medical assistance.
He was subsequently taken to Hamilton Police Station, where blood tests showed an alcohol concentration of between 198 and 202 milligrams per 100 millilitres. Bermuda's legal driving limit stands at 80mg/100ml — meaning Gibbons tested at roughly two and a half times over the threshold.
Senior Magistrate Maxanne Anderson imposed the 18-month ban and ordered Gibbons to observe DUI Court — a programme to which he had previously been sentenced — beginning October 27. Anderson also directed that a drug report be prepared for Gibbons and released him on $3,500 bail.
