Phone Impersonation Scam Hits RNC and RCMP Across Canada

Phone scam spoofing RNC number reported across the country

A telephone fraud scheme targeting multiple Canadian law enforcement agencies has expanded beyond Stephenville RCMP, vocm.com reports, with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary now confirming it has also been affected.

The scam operates by displaying a legitimate police phone number on the recipient's call display. In the RNC's case, callers have been receiving calls from 709-944-3405, a number formerly linked to the Officer in Charge of the Labrador City detachment. The fraudster then claims police have someone in custody and attempts to extract personal information from the recipient.

The RNC says it has received numerous reports from people living outside the province who were targeted by the scheme.

Anyone who receives such a call is advised to end the contact immediately. The RNC can be reached at 709-729-8000. Reports can also be filed with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
