St. Thomas Man Apprehended in Dominica After 20-Month Manhunt

Jahi Grant, a 46-year-old St. Thomas resident wanted on 12 criminal charges for nearly two years, was arrested in Dominica and transported back to the Virgin Islands on October 30, according to viconsortium.com. The charges include possession of an unlicensed machine gun, assault on a law enforcement officer, and possession of controlled substances with intent to distribute.

The case originates from a December 2024 incident in which authorities recovered a machine gun and a pistol. Grant reportedly fled the scene before officers could detain him. An arrest warrant was issued in January 2025, and the Virgin Islands Police Department formally requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force on January 14, 2025.

Through community tips and joint investigative work between the VIPD and the U.S. Marshals Service, authorities established that Grant had left St. Thomas and was living in Dominica. The U.S. Marshals' Jamaican Foreign Field Office then coordinated with Dominican authorities, who were informed of Grant's presence on the island and the outstanding warrants against him.

Dominican police task force members confirmed a sighting of Grant on October 19. He was arrested on October 27, bringing a manhunt spanning more than 20 months to a close. U.S. Marshals transported him to St. Thomas three days later, where he was turned over to the VIPD and booked into the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections.

Kwesi R. Howard, U.S. Marshal for the District of the Virgin Islands, credited the cross-border collaboration for the outcome.

"This successful operation highlights the strength of our law enforcement partnerships throughout the Caribbean," Howard said. "I commend the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force for their professionalism and cooperation in helping return this fugitive to the Virgin Islands. Working alongside the VIPD and our regional partners, we remain committed to ensuring that those who flee justice are held accountable."

The U.S. Marshals Service did not release the full list of charges or disclose the quantities and types of controlled substances involved. No court date for Grant's initial appearance has been announced, and no information on bail has been made public. The charges remain pending and have not been adjudicated.
