A Chilean citizen was detained in Puerto Madryn, Argentina, after taking part in an attempted robbery of a jewellery store, according to meganoticias.cl. Argentine authorities established that the man was operating with up to ten different identities and had a permanent ban from re-entering the country.
The incident occurred during the early hours of Sunday, when three individuals attempted to enter Joyería Lord through a hole in the wall. An alarm alerted police, who managed to detain two of those involved; the third managed to escape. Both detainees were held in preventive custody for 30 days.
One of those arrested drew the attention of investigators when he provided different names at different stages of the proceedings. Prosecutor Gastón Alcucero described how the inconsistencies were uncovered:
"When he was detained by police, he gave one identity and at the hearing he gave another. Then we received a report from the National Immigration Authority about who the subject is. They confirmed that he is Chilean and his name is different from the one he provided to police; in May 2022 he was reported by the Authority and has a permanent ban from re-entry."
Based on cross-referencing with migration records, investigators determined that the accused appeared under ten different identities in different Argentine jurisdictions, for which reason he was nicknamed the "man of a thousand faces".
The investigation now extends to other cities. Authorities are investigating a possible connection between the detainee and robberies that occurred in Bahía Blanca, Paraná, Concordia and Mar del Plata. The Justice system in Chubut has also requested information from Chilean authorities to determine whether the suspect is connected to crimes committed in Chile.
