Fugitive dies after armed confrontation with Buenos Aires Provincial Police in José C. Paz
A 22-year-old youth sought since February for the murder of a member of the Federal Prison Service died on Wednesday following a shooting with officers of the Buenos Aires Provincial Police in José C. Paz, according to zonanortediario.com.ar. During the operation, a police officer was shot in the leg, though he is out of danger.
The confrontation took place in the vicinity of Pichincha and Route 197, a few metres from the José C. Paz Concentration Market. Personnel from the 3rd Police Station who were conducting prevention work identified the suspect, who had an active arrest warrant.
It was Joel Dylan Carrizo, nicknamed "Pipo", accused of participating in the murder of Alberto Javier Ávalos, a prison officer shot during an attempted robbery in February this year.
Chronology of the confrontation
According to police reconstruction, the officers attempted to identify Carrizo and ordered him to halt. The youth drew a firearm and began shooting at the uniformed officers, sparking a shooting in the middle of a public street.
One of the police officers was wounded in the leg during the exchange of gunfire; Carrizo also received a bullet impact. Despite the wound, he managed to escape initially and moved through various dwellings in the sector attempting to avoid arrest.
The pursuit ended when the youth was cornered in a dead-end area. There, another exchange of gunfire occurred and, according to the police account, Carrizo ended his life with a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.
At the scene, a Bersa 9-millimetre calibre pistol with its magazine in place was seized, allegedly used by the suspect during the operation.
The investigators confirmed that Carrizo had an active arrest warrant since 6 March, requested by Decentralised Fiscal Unit No. 23 of Malvinas Argentinas and ordered by Guarantee Court No. 6. He was accused of aggravated theft due to use of a firearm and homicide committed in the course of crime. The investigation into the operation was assigned to Decentralised Fiscal Unit No. 25 of Malvinas Argentinas, under prosecutors Rodrigo Fabián Suárez and Ariel Gustavo Wassouf.
The February murder that triggered the search
The homicide for which Carrizo was being sought occurred on the night of 14 February, at the intersection of Route 197 and Gaspar Campos, also in José C. Paz.
Alberto Javier Ávalos, first assistant of the Federal Prison Service with duties at the Marcos Paz penal facility, was travelling on a Honda GLH 150 motorcycle with his 26-year-old stepdaughter. Upon stopping at a traffic light, they were intercepted by two armed criminals who were travelling on a fluorescent green enduro motorcycle.
The robbers attempted to steal from them and a confrontation ensued in which Ávalos received a gunshot to the chest. He was urgently transferred to Mercante Hospital, where he was admitted conscious, but his condition deteriorated rapidly. Despite resuscitation measures, he died from blood loss caused by the wound.
The young woman accompanying him was unharmed. She stated that her stepfather had attempted to defend himself with his service weapon.
Ávalos was 46 years old, was originally from Barranqueras, Chaco, and lived in the locality of Cuartel V. From that night on, the judiciary sought those responsible for the crime. Carrizo was one of the suspects identified in the case and remained at large until the confrontation that ended in his death.
