A man was arrested on Friday in Concepción del Uruguay after attempting to complete a second purchase at a shop where he had already acquired electrical goods using stolen cheques, according to lagacetaonline.com.ar.
The investigation was triggered by a complaint from a 48-year-old employee of an electrical goods store located at the intersection of Urquiza and Posadas. On the previous Wednesday, a customer had purchased a refrigerator, a freezer, a cooker, footwear and a dining table with chairs, paying with a post-dated cheque for an amount exceeding two million pesos.
The merchandise was delivered to a residence in the north-western sector of the city. The Centre for Operations and Monitoring (CECOM) alerted the shop that the cheque belonged to a batch of securities with a seizure order for theft and that it also corresponded to a closed bank account.
Upon learning of the fraud, the shopkeeper realised that the same buyer had attempted to arrange a second transaction. Personnel from the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Division, in coordination with the Radio-electric Command, then mounted a surveillance operation at the premises. When the suspect returned to make the new purchase, he was intercepted and arrested on the spot.
The man was transferred to a police station for identification and was remanded to the custody of the court. The authorities requested a search and seizure warrant for the residence where the electrical goods were delivered, with the aim of recovering all the merchandise purchased with the stolen cheques. The investigation continues to determine the full extent of the scheme and the whereabouts of the items.
