Arrest in Jujuy over phone threat to US diplomatic headquarters

According to diariocastellanos.com.ar, officers from the Federal Investigation Department (DFI) of the Argentine Federal Police (PFA) arrested a 35-year-old man in the province of Jujuy, identified as the author of a bomb threat made by telephone against the Embassy of the United States of America, located at Avenida Colombia 4300, in the Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Palermo.

The call was received on Wednesday, 29 July: a male voice indicated there was an explosive device inside the diplomatic headquarters. In response, the PFA immediately deployed a security operation in the surrounding area and proceeded with the preventive evacuation of the building. Personnel from the Federal Fire Service Superintendence inspected the property thoroughly and ruled out the presence of any explosive material.

The case fell under the purview of the National Criminal and Correctional Federal Court No. 6, headed by Dr María Servini, Secretariat No. 12 of Dr Gustavo Criscuolo, which entrusted the investigation to the Counter-Terrorism Investigation Unit Department (DUIA) of the PFA.

Investigators conducted field work and information analysis, supplemented by a technical report provided by the FBI regarding the telephone subscriber involved. Through geolocalisation tasks, they identified a property on Honduras Street, number 100, in the city of Perico, Jujuy, as the point from which the threats were allegedly made.

With the evidence gathered and by order of the intervening magistrate, the DUIA coordinated the operation with the Federal Operational Unit Division (DUOF) Jujuy, which executed the raid on the property. During the procedure, officers arrested the man and seized a mobile telephone.

The detainee, an Argentine national, was placed at the disposal of the court charged with the offence of "Public intimidation", pending the corresponding procedural actions. The operation was supervised by the National Security Ministry.
