Man detained for serious injuries after attacking partner on Avenida Alem

A 55-year-old man was detained in the early hours of Saturday after throwing a piece of brick weighing nearly two kilogrammes against his 35-year-old partner in a dwelling located on Avenida Leandro N. Alem at 1000 North, in the capital. The woman suffered a fracture of the tibia in her right leg and had to undergo emergency surgery. According to tiempodesanjuan.com, the incident is being investigated as serious injuries in a context of gender-based violence.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:37. A neighbour observed that the couple were arguing in the public way and that both were throwing stones, brick fragments and rubble at each other. At one point during the confrontation, the man took a large piece of brick and threw it at the woman. The impact on her right leg knocked her to the ground.

According to the account incorporated into the investigation, once the victim was lying down and complaining of severe pain, the aggressor approached her, struck her and tried to force her to get up. Since she could not walk due to the injury, the man grabbed her by the hair and dragged her several metres along the street and the gravel separating the avenue from the pavement, until forcing her into the dwelling.

Officers from the 2nd Police Station arrived at the scene following calls to 911. Upon arrival they found brick rubble scattered across the roadway, including one piece of considerable size. Neighbours informed them that the woman had been forcibly taken into a nearby dwelling. When there was no response from inside, the uniformed officers entered the dwelling and found the 55-year-old man alongside the woman, who was lying on a bed.

Initially, she stated that she was well. When she was able to speak alone with the police, she broke down in tears and reported that she had been injured by her partner. Medical personnel who attended the dwelling determined that she needed to be taken urgently to Hospital Guillermo Rawson, where professionals confirmed the tibia fracture and the need for surgical intervention.

During the procedure, investigators seized several blunt objects used in the confrontation. Among them, the brick block with cement adhered to it which, according to preliminary expert assessment, caused the serious injury: it weighed 1.749 kilogrammes. In the dwelling they also found two homemade weapons of the machete type, fashioned from sharpened iron.

The detainee was identified as Marcelo Ernesto Clavel, aged 55. He was charged with the offence of serious injuries in a context of gender-based violence, in breach of Law 26.485, and placed at the disposal of the Special Flagrancy System. The CAVIG Specialised Investigative Unit intervened in the case and deployed an interdisciplinary team to assist the victim while she remains hospitalised.
