The General Prosecutor's Office of the State of Mexico has incorporated a new line of investigation into the case of the murder of Jonathan Meléndez, his wife Ana Paula, his daughter Sofía and Aleyda Romero: an alleged economic motive linked to cash and cryptocurrencies, according to eldoce.tv.
The initial indications emerged from the statements of Diego Sebastián Rosen Ferlini, 51, a partner of the musician, and Gerardo Cisneros Bejarano, 52, identified as driver of the Argentine businessman. Both remain in ministerial custody, charged with the offences of bribery and resistance.
The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, clarified that one of the detained maintained a commercial relationship with the victim and allegedly used that bond of trust to gain access to the residence. The investigation seeks to determine what role each accused played in the attack and whether the theft of cash and cryptocurrencies constituted the central motive for the crime.
Investigators also located in Héroes Tecámac, Bosques section, the vehicle in which the suspects allegedly travelled. The automobile was incorporated into the case as evidence.
The quadruple homicide occurred on 1 September in the afternoon in the Grand Viure subdivision, in Zona Esmeralda. Meléndez, his wife, his three-year-old daughter and Aleyda Romero—who worked for the family—were found dead inside the residence. The musician's son was found alive and uninjured in a bedroom; he was subsequently handed over to his relatives.
The Prosecutor's Office continues proceedings to establish whether the theft of cash and cryptocurrencies was indeed the trigger for the attack and to determine the degree of responsibility of each of the detained.
