Detainees hold police officer hostage at Alcaidía 1 in Buenos Aires City

A violent riot at Alcaidía 1 in Buenos Aires City concluded with a City Police officer held as a hostage inside a cell, according to borderperiodismo.com reporting based on police sources.

City Police sources confirmed to news outlet Infobae that there was no risk of escape and that, at the time of the incident, no injuries had been reported. However, videos recorded by the detainees themselves and broadcast by LN+ showed the officer sitting on a bed, surrounded by detainees, whilst another inmate lay on the floor with apparent injuries.

"Look at the 'cobani', we have him over there," can be heard in one of the recordings. In the images, the detainees were also demanding the presence of a prosecutor: "Have the prosecutor come down."

The confrontation originated within one of the cells of the facility. As the situation escalated, ambulances from SAME and fire brigade units were mobilised, along with police personnel who disrupted normal traffic flow in the area.

The operation was joined by members of the Special Operations Division (DOEM) of the City Police, accompanied by psychologists and a negotiator. Subsequently, agents from the Urban Containment Operations Department (DOUC) also arrived at the scene.

Around 4 p.m., authorities allowed a journalist from A24 to enter the facility to demand that television channels remove the drones flying over the building. Minutes earlier, a new video shot from inside the cell had circulated, in which detainees could be seen breaking down doors and gates.

The episode occurred in the context of the transfer of inmates from Villa Devoto prison to the new correctional facility in Marcos Paz. The Buenos Aires City Government's project envisages that, in a later stage, detainees held in city police stations would also be relocated.
