Police officer detained in Batán faces new charges for aggravated robbery in Mar del Plata
Nahuel Agustín Paz, a discharged police officer imprisoned in Penal Unit 44, faces charges for a second robbery and three additional offences. The Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating whether he leaked police information to other criminal gangs.
New case file complicates situation for imprisoned officer accused of being part of robbery gang
The judicial situation of Nahuel Agustín Paz worsened this week. The discharged police officer, who remains detained in Penal Unit 44 in Batán for a residential robbery that occurred in March, will now face a new charge linked to an assault committed in the early hours of 2 June, according to mi8.com.ar.
Public Prosecutor's Office No. 13, headed by prosecutor Mariano Moyano, moved forward on Paz's alleged participation in that second incident, as part of an investigation that had already resulted in detention orders against four other suspects.
According to the Public Prosecutor's Office theory, Paz would have played a specific role within the gang: monitoring police radio frequencies to alert the criminals about the movements of officers and to anticipate a possible intervention. Investigators maintain that this information would have been used to guarantee impunity for the robbery.
For this incident, Paz was charged as co-perpetrator of a quintuple-aggravated robbery, having been committed in a populated area and by a gang, through breaking and entering, with burglary, and with use of weapons, with the additional aggravating factor that one of the participants belonged to a security force.
In addition to that main charge, three further counts were added: breach of duties of a public official, failure to promote the prosecution of criminals, and illegal possession of civilian firearms.
Paz will have to appear before Public Prosecutor's Office No. 13 to give a statement on this new case. His procedural situation thus accumulates two legal fronts open simultaneously.
Investigators are also pursuing a line of inquiry that could further expand the scope of the accusation: determining whether the police radio frequencies would have been used by Paz to benefit other criminal gangs, beyond the organisation being investigated for the robbery on 2 June.
